On The Line: Nuxx on Culture, Community, and Creativity

the homies made along the way

Nuxx, an artist whose musical blueprint was first sketched in the quietude of Syracuse, NY, truly found her vibrant hues amidst the soundscapes of New York City, now firmly planted in the heart of Philadelphia. Her initial foray into the world of sound was less a grand declaration and more a paternal whisper, as her father’s consistent curation of new CD releases fostered an early, deep-seated appreciation for the alt-rock anthems of the early 2000s. Yet, it was the serendipitous encounter with Justice’s "Cross," an album left behind by her brother, that truly crystallized her artistic direction, cementing itself as a foundational album in her musical education. Beyond the auditory, Nuxx's creative wellspring flows from the human experience itself, finding profound inspiration in the rich tapestry of cultural expression woven within every city, town, and community she encounters. With overwhelming support from her dedicated fanbase, Nuxx's future is sharply focused on bringing new music and expression to stages far and wide. We were happy to get a few questions in for the latest edition of, On The Line.

Hello! Thanks for takinbg the time to do this. What's your hometown and where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in Philly, but Nuxx, took shape in New York City. Funnily enough, I’m not even from either of those places. I grew up in Syracuse, NY.

Who was the first person that got you into music?

My dad. He always kept up to date with the new CD releases from the library. We’d listen to all of them in full while driving. I remember listening to a lot of 2000’s alt rock.

Do you remember the first song or album that had a big impact on you?

My brother left behind the album “Cross” by Justice in the car that we shared. I think I listened to it almost everyday for a year. Total banger front to back.

What's been the biggest non-music inspiration for you lately?

That’s a good question. I think it’s just people. I’m interested ultimately in culture, and how people choose to express themselves. Every city, town and community I've encountered is unique.

We saw that the Yellow Smoke vinyl sold-out. Congrats. Can you tell us a little bit about the Compilation LP and what we can expect this year—New videos, tours etc.

Thank you! The compilation vinyl was a really special release for me, I’d never had Nuxx tracks pressed in this format before, and to have all of my best songs, with vinyl quality sound, is so rewarding. The support from listeners is the cherry on top.

A lot of this year has been focused on touring my new EP, Bird Brain. You can definitely expect more live shows and festival appearances! I’m also working on new music that I can’t wait to share.

“The best part about releasing music is definitely the homies made along the way. Most of my friendships at this point have been made through playing shows, touring, and film/video shoots. “

What is the biggest challenge you've had to face as an artist thus far?

It’s challenging being a solo project! It can be overwhelming to do everything on your own, and at the end of the day you have to really be able to stand behind your art. On the positive side I've gained a lot of confidence in myself as an artist and as a person.

Is there anyone you'd like to collaborate with? Other artists to appear on a song or even a visual artist for an album cover or merch?

I recently toured with Jeff in Leather, and I think a collaboration there might be pretty neat.

What's been the best thing that's happened since you started releasing music?

The best part about releasing music is definitely the homies made along the way. Most of my friendships at this point have been made through playing shows, touring, and film/video shoots.

Have you had a "it happened for a reason" moment recently? Something that was challenging at the time, but led to an unexpected positive outcome?

Right around the time I was starting to feel traction with Nuxx, I was laid off from my  job. While struggling to find new work, I hustled with art and music. Although it was an incredibly stressful time, it gave me the push I needed to actually go for it with this project.

What platforms have been the most helpful with getting your music heard? Bandcamp, YouTube, IG etc.

I’m not sure there’s a platform that is mostly responsible for getting my music heard. Honestly, I think the best way to discover Nuxx is live at a show. Aside from that, I’m probably the most active day to day on IG.

How would you define success?

Success is making something that you’re proud of.

Can you share one of your lyrics from your songs that sums up your state of mind RN / feels representative of you?

I’m not fucking around.
