TOPS Unveils "Falling on My Sword": A Gritty New Chapter
Montreal's beloved indie band, TOPS, have once again masterfully twisted expectations with their latest single, "Falling on My Sword," a compelling precursor to their highly anticipated album, Bury the Key, due out August 22nd on Ghostly International. There’s not as much of the sun-drenched, dream-pop reveries that defined their earlier sound; "Falling on My Sword" falls into a darker, more visceral landscape. The track drives with a moody post-punk edge, with guitarist David Carriere openly acknowledging how his "love of hardcore" informed the song's more aggressive guitar parts and and even includes a hardcore breakdown albeit played in Tops style. It’s great. Coupled with a visually striking music video directed by JJ Stratford, the song feels like a bold declaration—a willingness to shed past skins and embrace a grittier, more experimental side. This unexpected pivot not only redefines their artistic boundaries but also sets a thrilling precedent for what promises to be a legendary new era for the band, cementing their status as true indie innovators.
